How To Make Ice Cream, With A KitchenAid Mixer

I don’t know about you, but I could eat ice cream any time of year. Summer, winter, blazing hot weather, freezing cold temperatures, it doesn’t matter. Some people reserve this tasty treat for warmer months, but I think that’s crazy talk. While I love popping into the store and picking up a pint of ice cream, sometimes I crave that fresh, soft-serve style ice cream that you just can’t find in the freezer section of the grocery store.

Luckily for me, I found this awesome tutorial on how to make my own ice cream right at home using my KitchenAid mixer! Seriously, it doesn’t get much easier than this. While this might not be “healthy” in the traditional sense, this homemade version of ice cream is certainly better, with fresh ingredients and no preservatives. First, gather your ingredients. 3/4 cup of sugar, a pinch of salt, 2 teaspoons of high-quality vanilla extract, 2 cups of whipping cream, and one cup of milk of your choice. Combine everything into a medium-sized bowl, making sure to whisk your ingredients together so the sugar dissolves into the liquid. Once everything is mixed together, go ahead and put it in the fridge for at least half an hour, but up to an hour if you have the time.


Here’s where the fun comes in. The ice cream attachment comes with a large bowl, as you can see, along with a magnetic attachment and a special paddle. Now, you’re going to want to store the big bowl in the freezer for a while before using it. Depending on how often you make ice cream or how much space you have in your freezer, you might just want to store it there so it’s ready to go whenever you have an ice cream craving!


Once you have the ice cream attachment assembled, go ahead and turn the mixer on low. It’s important to have the mixer running while you slowly pour in the ice cream mixture. Then, just leave the mixer to do its thing for fifteen to twenty minutes. Once the ice cream reaches the level of firmness you want, stop the mixer and scrape down the sides and paddle into an airtight container. If you want to add things like fruit or Oreo cookie crumbs, go ahead and do that before scraping everything down. Just add your mix-ins and let the KitchenAid run for a few seconds.

For clean-up, it’s important to note that the bowl will still be very cold and frozen, so you should let it sit on the counter until it reaches room temperature before you clean it. Otherwise, if you rinse out the freezing cold bowl with hot water, it might crack.
